OTTAWA, ON — Environment Canada, the federal agency that oversees environmental policy, has established levels of quantification (LoQs) for dioxins (PCDD), furans (PCDF) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The set levels are 32 picograms per cubic metre for PCDD and PCDF, and 6 nanograms per cubic metre for HCB. These levels, said the agency, will act as a benchmark to develop targets and timelines for Canada-wide standards, whose aim is to effectively eliminate such toxins from the environment. The LoQs have been derived by assessing the standard deviation of repeated measurements of analysed substances at a concentration near the detection limit. The emission data was obtained from both combustion sources and spiked train and ash analyses.
