PORT HAWKESBURY, NS — Stora Port Hawkesbury Ltd.’s Woodlands Division became the first forestry operation in Canada — and only the second in North America — to receive ISO 14001 registration of its Environmental Management System. The woodlands EMS covers forest planning, road construction, harvesting and silviculture. Russ Waycott, Stora’s vice-president (Woodlands), said the certification sets a benchmark for forest practices. “This can lead to possible future sustainable forest management certification under either the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the Forest Steward Council (FSC).” Stora said it also expects to extend its certification to its entire mill operation, which it expects to receive in mid-1999.
