Fire destroys historic paper plant in N.J.

February 1, 2019 – A massive fire destroyed the historic Marcal Paper plant in New Jersey earlier this week, leaving 500 people without jobs.

USA Today reports that a nine-alarm blaze Wednesday left only 10 per cent of the 1940s-era, 45,000-square-foot warehouse building standing in ruins. The building was a distribution centre for Marcal Paper. No one was injured.

The cold weather and high winds prevented firefighters from being able to extinguish the fire quickly, officials say.

The state’s department of labour says it is pursuing benefits for affected employees until they are able to find work.
