August 21, 2018 – Construction is underway at Progroup AG’s third paper mill, this time at Sandersdorf-Brehna, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The Landau, Germany–based paper producer is investing €375 million into the new plant, which will have an annual capacity of 750,000 tonnes and increase Progroup’s annual production of containerboard to 1.85 million tonnes. Voith Paper will build the new paper machine.
Progroup expects the new project will create 140 direct jobs and 350 indirect jobs.
“We are systematically pursuing our ‘Green Hightech Philosophy’ with this project, and with the environment at the forefront of our minds we are consciously investing in state-of-the-art equipment,” said Jürgen Heindl, CEO and chairman of Progroup AG. This means that the company is only using recovered paper as a raw material. “To put it another way, not a single tree is felled to supply our state-of-the-art mills. In the era of climate change this is conscious, real-life environmental protection.”
A second stage of the project will also include the construction of an RDF power plant, which will use its energy-efficient design to supply the new high-performance paper machine with power and steam, largely freeing the paper factory from its dependence on fossil fuels. The impurities contained in recovered paper will be converted into heat in the RDF power plant. The paper factory will also be equipped with an optimized water system, and the company will invest in ultra-modern wastewater treatment.
