MONTREAL, QC — Logging companies operating in the northern Quebec regions of Abitibi and the territory covered by the James Bay and Northern Agreement (JBNQA) will be able to obtain their annual permits and continue with business as usual, said Justice Jean-Jacques Croteau of the Montreal District Superior Court at the end of December 1999. He wrote, “In this particular case, de facto doctrine allows logging companies to obtain their annual permits at the end of March and to continue with business as usual.” The judge’s ruling follows an application for an injunction made by Quebec Cree chiefs, who had asked the court to stop the granting of permits until a final decision is reached in regards to the JBNQ agreements.
