MONTREAL, QC — The Pulp and Paper Products Council has been formed to coordinate the activities of several new product groups and, as well, to provide them with market research services. The new groups include the Market Pulp Producers Association, the Printing and Writing Papers Association, the Paper Packaging Association and the Paper Recycling Association. The North American Newsprint Producers Association is also a member of the council. The reasons centre on the fact that two-thirds of North American newsprint capacity is owned by companies with assets in the United States and Canada. Consolidation within the industry has essentially turned the two countries into a single producing region, one accounting for over 40% of the world’s newsprint capacity. The council’s principal operating unit is the Pulp and Paper Data Centre, formerly the department of economics and statistics of Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. Its mandate is to provide statistical and market research services to the product groups and their member companies. As well, it will communicate market data and information to the financial community and public.
