The Non-Thesis Masters Programs at UBC and McGill will not be offered for one year each over a two-year cycle beginning in 1999 to permit revamping of the programs. The one-year program consists of regular course work and labs. In recent years, there has been a need to update the programs, and at UBC to bring it into conformity with a new three-credit system. Enrollment has diminished in the past two years and this was felt a good time for change. The Advanced Papermaking Initiative, with new faculty being hired, will help reduce dependence on outside consultants for the program.
At UBC, the program attracts five to 10 students per year and has taught 114 students over the last 15 years. Over 75% of the UBC graduates have found employment in the pulp and paper and allied industries. Many have advanced to senior positions within their companies.
UBC will not operate the program in the 1999-2000 academic year, McGill in 2000-2001. Both programs will be back in full operation the following year. “It should be good timing”, added Kerekes. “We have already received more inquiries for Fall 2000 than we have had in recent years at this early date.”
