November 15, 2018 – Paper Excellence, the parent company of Nova Scotia’s Northern Pulp mill, which has been embroiled in a standoff with local fishermen about the location of a potential effluent drainage pipe, has said that it may not be able to meet a government-mandated deadline for the pipe installation.
The government has ordered Northern Pulp to get its wastewater out of the lagoons that it is currently using near the Pictou Landing First Nations reserve by January 2020. The mill has been attempting to complete an environmental assessment of the water of Northumberland Strait as an alternative solution, but has been blocked by local fisherman boats protesting the proposed plan.
The CBC reports that Jean-Francois Guillot, vice-president of operations at Paper Excellence, has said that while a new $6-million wastewater treatment facility will be ready by January 2020, the mill might fall short of the deadline given the battle over the discharge location.
Guillot says that if Northern Pulp misses the deadline, it will lose its industrial permit and have to cease operations.
