PALATINE, IL — Sonoco has selected Trace Laboratories as its independent testing site for a new materials tester. “Sonoco’s SDS Tester is the world’s only test device that consistently and accurately measures the dynamic strength of paper mill cores used in the paper industry,” the company claims in a press release. Sonoco currently operates eight such testing labs in Europe and North America, with Trace the first that is open to the industry. It will test any paper manufacturer’s cores for the purpose of comparative and quality analysis. Results of the tests will be returned to companies within three days, followed by a detailed report in five days. The benefit of such tests, says Trace Labs, is they “will allow core manufacturers to accurately predict core performance without [the need of] expensive and time-consuming field trials.” Sonoco invested over $1 million (US) to research and develop its tester.
