Answers are yet to come on the fate of Canfor’s fire-destroyed North Central Plywoods mill, in Prince George, BC. The blaze, which broke out on May 26, has rendered the facility inoperable, putting 250 employees out of work.

According to a recent report by the Prince George Citizen, Canfor officials have confirmed a decision will be made as soon as possible. Numerous considerations must be taken into account however, including meetings with insurers, building timelines, and difficulties associated with retaining a qualified, local workforce.

As the Prince George Citizen report noted, completing the $800 million rebuild could take up to 18 months, and construction would only begin once the company reaches a decision concerning the undertaking, which is also anticipated to take several months. As a result, employees could be subject to a two-year waiting period.
