Outage at Resolute’s Thunder Bay mill affects effluent contaminant levels

February 25, 2021  By P&PC Staff

An unplanned shutdown in Resolute’s pulp and paper mill in Thunder Bay, Ont. earlier this month resulted in higher than normal contaminant levels in its treated effluent for one day.

CBC News reports that on Feb. 7, two days after an unexpected outage at the pulp plant, cold weather led to a problem in the effluent treatment system. Resolute spokesperson Seth Kursman told the news outlet that “appropriate steps and corrective actions were taken quickly to mitigate the impacts.”

Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Parks and Conservation was informed Feb. 8 and is reviewing the issue.
