ROBERT E. STRENDE was elected VP and region manager, Louisiana operations, Boise Paper Solutions. He joined Boise in 1988 as production manager at the Vancouver, WA, pulp and paper mill.

Stora Enso announced that MATS NORDLANDER has been appointed executive vice president, Stora Enso’s merchants Division and president of Papyrus. He will succeed SVEN ROSMAN who is retiring.

The Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC) awarded ELLEN CARTER with the 2003 Nickerson Service Award for her long-term contributions toward the advancement of ISCC and its purposes. The council also awarded its highest honor, the Godlove Award, to ROLF G. KUEHNI, for his distinguished service to the colour community and the understanding of colour to art, science and industry.

Babcock & Wilcox named TERRY W. HOOD as director of Business Ethics and Compliance. He will provide leadership in matters related to compliance, ethics and governance.

Imerys appointed RICH RYAN as executive VP, Pigments to Paper Business Group and as a member of the Imerys Operating Committee. He replaces GERARD BUFFIERE, who was appointed as CEO.

JOHN E. HANLEY was named VP and corporate controller of Fibermark. He has served as CFO for Axsys Technologies and Lydall Inc.

WILLIAM “JIM” FREDERICK, JR., the CEI professor of Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, has accepted the appointment as director of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST).

TERESA PRESAS has been appointed as the new director general of the Confederation of European Paper Industries. Presas is the VP for European affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa, as well as director of corporate environmental affairs in Brussels.

EDDIE CARTER has been named export sales assistant at Thiele Kaolin Company. Carter has been with Thiele for six years, after three years at Waco Chemical Company, a wholly owned Thiele subsidiary.

Mercer International announced the appointment of DAVID GANDOSSI, CA, as its executive vice president, finance and chief financial officer.

Adhesives Research has promoted KAREN M. OLSON to the position of president and chief executive officer. Olson succeeds EDWARD L. DAISEY, who is retiring from the company after serving as president and CEO of Adhesives Research for eight years.

LOWELL SCHLEICHER, whose work with the microencapsulation process led to the invention of carbonless paper, died June 30, 2003. He was 78.
