Workers have returned to the Port of Montreal today after a 12-day strike ended with a truce on Aug. 21.
According to The Canadian Press, the deal between longshore workers and management will last until March 20, 2021, so that talks can resume without further work interruptions.
Earlier this summer, workers staged daytime walkouts seeking improved wages and scheduling. After management reduced pay for night shifts and changed shipping routes in response to the walkouts, the longshore workers went on strike Aug. 10.
Goods were unable to move in and out of the port, and at least eight container ships were rerouted to Halifax, Saint John and New York City.
The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) was one of several industry groups that called for an end to the strike, saying its members had been adversely affected by the bottlenecking at the port.
