North American printing and writing paper demand was down 0.4% in April compare to a year ago, reported the Pulp and Paper Products Council (PPPC).
Production remained unchanged during the month, compared to last year. Shipments to North America dropped 3.1% in April while sales overseas grew 3.7%, for an overall decline of 2.9% in shipments.
As a result, the operating rate for the month was 87% compared to 91% a year ago.
Mill inventories closed the month at 2.6 million tonnes — 67,000 tonnes less than at the end of March 2003.
