Printing and writing paper demand was down 3.6% in August, bringing the year-to-date figure to +0.5%. Shipments to North America dropped 5.8% in August and 1.6% year-to-date.
The Pulp and Paper Products Council said sales to overseas markets grew 30% in August, over the same month last year, for an increase of 16% so far this year. As a result, the operating rate for the first eight months of 2003 was 88% compared to 89% a year ago.
Mill inventories closed the month at 2.7 million tonnes — 36,000 tonnes less than at the end of July 2003.
