Roughly 70 people are out of a job, as Cascades’ FjordCell pulp mill in Jonquire, QC, wraps up its operations for an indefinite period of time.
Citing pressure from the Canadian dollar, high energy and wood prices, Cascades’ president Eric Laflamme said market conditions left the company with “no other choice but to suspend operations.”
The closure is scheduled for the week of July 3, once supplies of raw material and chemicals run out.
The facility, which specializes in the production of bleached softwood kraft pulp, churns out 82,000 tons of product every year, which is subsequently sold to other Cascades’ operations, chiefly Cascades boxboard Group Jonquire and the Rolland division of the company’s fine papers group.
