Three pulp and paper companies have landed on the list of Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens for 2021.

The list is released annually by “clean capitalism” media brand Corporate Knights, and evaluates companies with annual revenues over $1 billion.

“This year’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens were evaluated against 24 key performance indicators, including the clean revenue result for each company, which is percentile-ranked against industry peers and weighted at 50 per cent toward the overall score,” says Corporate Knights on its website.

Among the KPIs measured are emissions profile, ESG performance, safety performance and raw resource use.

In a statement, Graham Kissack, vice-president, environment, health and safety and corporate communications at Paper Excellence, which has placed on the list 14 times (including as Catalyst Paper), says, “In a world awash with plastic waste, we see a bright future for our sustainably sourced and fully recyclable pulp and paper products.”

In 2020, Paper Excellence achieved a 60 per cent reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions relative to 1990 while using an energy basket made up of over 84 per cent renewables.

Thirty-three per cent of the organization’s solid waste is beneficially reused or recycled while over 53 per cent of its electricity comes from self-generated green power.
