ATLANTA, GA — Hydro Dynamics introduced its ShockWave Power at the International Chemical Recovery Conference in June. This device heats liquids by shock waves rather than by the conventional combustion and heat transfer method. The ShockWave Power generator is designed to provide higher rates of efficiency in four areas: heating, mixing, separating and concentrating. Thus, scaling is eliminated in the heating and concentration of liquids such as black liquor. Black liquor solids content is said to be able to reach 85 to 86% with no scaling. The footprint of the generator is small. The biggest unit is 400 hp, when gas and liquids are mixed to reduce sodium sulphide. It can be placed before the direct contact evaporators to reduce sodium sulphide to below 0.1 g/L. The unit can be connected to a mill’s control loop. Besides black liquor, other pulp and paper applications could include bleaching, white liquor (polysulphide generation), dissolved air flotation or any gas/liquor heating or mixing operation.

The generator works by taking a fluid into the machine housing where it passes over the generator’s spinning cylinder. The specific geometry of the holes in the cylinder, clearance between the cylinder, and the housing and rotational speed create pressure differences within the liquid where tiny bubbles form and collapse. These collapsing bubbles generate shock waves that are used to heat, concentrate, mix and separate. The first pulp and paper-related unit application is due to start up in an environmental application at a US mill.
