VANCOUVER, BC — The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), BC’s Knowledge Development Fund, and UBC’s Blusson Fund have jointly awarded $400 000 to professors at University of British Columbia in support of their research activities in the Advanced Papermaking Initiative. James Olson and Mark Martinez, affiliated with UBC’s Pulp and Paper Centre, have received the infrastructure grant to be used to equip research laboratories in fibre processing, papermaking, and paper structure. Olson’s work in fibre processing specializes in fibre fractionation and Martinez’ work in papermaking looks at the influences of forming on sheet structure. Forest Renewal BC funds the Advanced Papermaking Initiative, which in turn funds faculty salaries, student scholarships, teaching and research equipment at UBC and BCIT. Paprican is the industry partner.
