Resolute loses part of lawsuit against environmental organizations; defamation charges stand

January 29, 2019 – Resolute Forest Products has lost part of its recent lawsuit against a group of environmental organizations in California. 

Nelson Bennett at Business in Vancouver reports that in the suit, filed three years ago, Resolute says that Greenpeace USA, Stand.Earth and five individuals defamed the company by saying it was logging trees the Montagnes Blanches region of Quebec, even though it was not. 

District Court Judge Jon S. Tigar ruled that suit may stand.

However, Resolute also brought racketeering charges against those named in the suit, which Tigar dismissed, saying that the company was attempting to prevent criticism of its practices.

A statement by Resolute says that the company does not consider the process a failure, since the defamation suit still stands: “In conjunction with our legal action, we plan to maintain our effort to publicly hold Greenpeace and their allies accountable for the economic harm they have caused not only to our company, but to the thousands of people who live and work in the boreal forest.”

Resolute still has an open case in Ontario against Greenpeace Canada.
