Creve Coeur, Mo. and Chicago, IL — Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has accepted an invitation to join the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), a global business organization dedicated to sustainable development through economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.

“We are proud to have been invited to join the WBCSD, an organization that shares our commitment to sustainability and is widely recognized as the leading business voice on issues of sustainable development,” Patrick J. Moore, Smurfit-Stone chairman and CEO said. “A commitment to sustainability is something our employees, customers, and shareholders should expect from us and something that our business requires.”

“Smurfit-Stone is North America’s leading producer of integrated paperboard products and is one of the world’s largest paper recyclers,” said Bjorn Stigson, WBCSD president “We are strengthened by having them on board and welcome their contribution to our mission of being a catalyst for change towards sustainability. We greatly look forward to benefiting from Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation’s knowledge and experience.”

The WBCSD was formed consequent to the United Nation’s Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. Today, the council has some 200 members drawn from more than 35 countries and 20 major industrial sectors. Membership is by invitation of the WBCSD’s Executive Committee to companies which share a commitment to sustainable development.
