Smurfit-Stone announced that the company’s U.S. wood procurement operations are now certified under both the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management standards and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standards. Both the ISO Environmental Management and SFI certifications recognize the company’s superior wood procurement policies and management practices.
To receive these certifications, Smurfit-Stone’s forest management program passed an independent third party audit by the environmental auditing firm, Bureau Veritas Quality International. The SFI program includes a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures that integrate the growing and harvesting of trees with sound environmental stewardship.
