Canfor CEO Jim Shepherd is doubtful the softwood lumber agreement will go through as is.

“I think an awful lot of work will be done to see if we can salvage this thing, but at this point it seems very discouraging that this will happen,” Reuters reported Shepherd as saying. “I think each company and each region feels quite sincere about their needsIf there was one item, or two or three that could get enough support in this country I am not sure what it is at this point,” he continued.

Shepherd contends the two governments are being ‘politically unrealistic’ concerning the feasibility of potential modifications to the deal.

Reuters further reported the Canfor CEO as confirming that although his company does indeed support the agreement, he would like to see changes made to it, although this would likely prove a difficult task as ‘the Canadian industry cannot agree within itself what it wants.’
