Hartsville, S.C. — Sonoco, a global supplier of industrial and consumer packaging, has launched Sunoco Sustainability Solutions (S3). This new service, operated under the Sonoco Recycling division, will provide manufacturing facilities with productivity savings by identifying ways to reduce waste materials going to landfills, and increase profitability by finding alternative uses for previously unrecycled wastes.

Jack Sanders, senior VP of Sonoco explains, “S3 was originally developed and piloted at 12 Sonoco plants to improve productivity by reducing waste materials going to landfills. However, once we identified the many benefits of the program, we began partnering with some of our customers’ locations and found that the service could provide significant productivity savings along with new revenue sources and environmental benefits.”

The service starts with an audit at the customer’s location to review its current programs for handling wastes, then customized programs are offered to reduce waste hauling charges and landfill fees, resulting in significant savings. In addition, the service looks for possibilities to sell or find new uses for previously landfilled materials to generate new income. When the programs are up and running, the service provides reporting of the advantages both in terms of financial savings and environmental benefits.

Sonoco collects approximately 3.5 million tons of recyclable materials annually, including corrugated containers and other paper, plastics, metal and glass. Sonoco Recycling collects and processes recyclable materials at 46 locations on North America and Europe.
