MONTREAL, QC — The Pulp and Paper Products Council announced that North American newsprint mills ran at 94% of their capacity in September, as production contracted 4.1% compared to the same month last year. So far in 2005, mills have cut their newsprint production by 4.4%. In September, total shipments slid 2.5% due to a 6.1% drop in sales to the U.S., whereas deliveries to Canada and overseas increased 3.6% and 8.6% respectively. In the first nine months of the year, total shipments by North American producers decreased 3.9%. By the end of September, North American mill stocks decreased by 48,000 tonnes, to stand at 306,000 tonnes.
