Stora Enso Oyj is partnering up with Neste Oil to cut greenhouse gases.

The duo will be collaborating on the development of new technology to produce fuel from wood residues. The project will kick off with the construction of a demonstration plant at Storas Varkaus mill in Finland.

The plant is expected to cost 14 million, and will be integrated into the energy infrastructure of the mill, where the gas produced will equal the energy needed to heat 4,300 homes and will substantially cut carbon dioxide emissions.

After the development phase, the two companies will then construct a full-scale commercial production plan at another of Storas mills.

This project helps us fulfill the requirements of increasing the use of biofuels in the European Union and Finland, Trade and Industry Minister Mauri Pekkarinen said. The government, on its part, will support efforts to increase capacity of biofuel production and finance R&D in the field to increase possible exports of biofuels,

The demonstration plant is anticipated to be up and running by 2008.
