Tembec’s paper mill in Pine Falls, MB, narrowly escaped a strike, and workers will vote on a newly proposed contract this week, Reuters reported the union as saying.

A tentative labour agreement was struck on August 30, after employees had already formed picket lines for the scheduled strike deadline, the report confirmed.

Reuters reported the union will present the new contact to employees this week, at which point the bargaining committee will recommend they accept the deal.

Improved wages and benefits remain issues of contention in the ongoing debate. The previous contract expired on August 31, 2005.
