VANCOUVER, BC — Interfor has garnered a UN-sponsored award — Corporate Environmental Management Award — in recognition of its environmental policies. Robert Keyes, head of the Canadian Council for International Business, which nominated Interfor for the award, said: “Interfor has gone to great lengths to work in harmony with the natural surroundings and communities in which it operates.” Duncan Davies, Interfor company president and chief executive officer, said, “Forestry is changing in a fundamental way. We recognize that for Interfor to be successful, the industry must build new relationships and continue to develop new ways of doing business. This award tells me the world believes us to be on the right track.” In a speech on global climate change to business and government leaders, Davies urged delegates to support Canadian forestry’s attempts to vigorously manage the land base. He endorsed the notion of international trading of emission permits, pointing out that Canada has been pulling more than its weight as a carbon sink for the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
