Draft CSA forest management standard out for public review

The draft, fourth revision of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Group Sustainable Forest Management System (SFM) standard incorporates changes related to aboriginal relations, public involvement, safety and protection of water features.

The draft version of the CSA SFM Z809 Standard has been posted for public review.  The public review and comment period will run for 60 days, from August 4, 2015 to October 4, 2015. It can be accessed and commented on using the link: http://publicreview.csa.ca/Home/Details/1712. 

A pdf copy of the standard is provided for those wanting to store or print it. A “Major Changes” document gives an overview of the most significant changes being proposed.

Among the changes is a stronger, standalone section specific to Aboriginal people has been created in a new Criterion 7 called “Aboriginal Relations”. Requirements in this section highlight the importance of building good relationships, being flexible in ways of involving willing Aboriginal communities in forest management planning, and incorporating Aboriginal and treaty rights into forestry plans.

The CSA Z809 standard is based on the Criteria and Indicators Framework of the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM). It now also contains an additional criterion specific to Aboriginal people.

A core requirement for meeting prescriptions that protect water features has been added to this version. Public advisory groups will be required to help identify new targets to meet the requirements of this indicator.

Also, a  separate element has been created for requirements related to the safety of employees, contractors, and affected communities.
