The Norampac division of Cascades has completed an exchange with U.S.-based Rand-Whitney Container, acquiring a plant in Newtown, Connecticut, in exchange for certain assets of Norampac’s New England plant, located in Thompson, Connecticut. The Newtown plant manufactures corrugated packaging.

Kadant Johnson Inc. has successfully started up its ThermoMax steam system at Norampac’s corrugated packaging plant in Drummondville, Quebec. The steam system serves a new corrugator line that was part of a $26 million modernization project that doubled the production capacity of the plant. The corrugator has a face-width of 110 in. and is designed to operate at sustained speeds of 450 m/min. It is the first of its kind in Canada.

Cascades has exceeded the target for re-using residual materials that was set in its 2013-2015 Sustainable Development Plan. The company gave a second life to 76 per cent of the residual materials generated by its plants, exceeding its target of 71 per cent. Over this three-year period, a total of 1.4 million tonnes of residuals were recovered.

ABB has been chosen as one of the suppliers for the paper machine rebuild project at Kruger’s Trois-Rivières Mill in Quebec. The project is part of Kruger’s $250-million investment to rebuild its No. 10 newsprint machine (PM10) to manufacture 100-per-cent-recycled, lightweight high-strength linerboard. Once the conversion is complete, PM 10 will produce 360,000 metric tonnes of linerboard annually for use in Kruger’s box plants and for the global packaging market.

The use of bio-based cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) offers potential benefits for the production of both conventional and new paper grades, according to a technical paper authored by experts from GL&V and the University of Maine. The paper, The Application of CNF to Improve Packaging Grade Performance, was presented at PaperWeek Canada in February.

Cascades announced on World Water Day that it has exceeded its 2015 target for reducing its water consumption. The packaging and tissue manufacturer had as an objective to decrease wastewater output of its plants to 10.6 cubic meters of water per tonne of products by the end of the 2013–2015 Sustainable Development Plan.

The outlook for the global paper and forest products industry is stable, says Moody's Investors Service. The ratings agency’s outlook reflects expectations that the consolidated operating income of the 46 paper and forest product companies that Moody's rates globally will increase by zero to two per cent over the next 12-18 months.
