ATLANTA, GA — CyberMetrics has developed an on-line crack detector, the DAR 3, which detects edge cracks in a paper web moving at speeds up to 2500 m/min. The sensor notes problems resulting from excess drying, mechanical stress or other things that produce microscopic tears. In short, operators are alerted in time to take corrective action. The crack-detection system works by looking for changes in edge crack frequency and size before they become large. It will detect cracks as small as 0.5 mm.
