According to a recent report by The Vancouver Sun, NDP forests critic Bob Simpson is concerned the closure will have a negative impact on the commercial viability of the Pope & Talbot facility.
“It makes that Pope & Talbot mill less appealing for a buyer to come in and pick it up if they don’t have raw material supplies,” The Sun reported Simpson as saying. “If Canfor is out of there, I don’t think they can run that mill. The incremental costs to ship fibre in from another location are just going to be through the roof if you look at where fuel costs are going.”
Canfor closed its mill on June 12, putting 200 employees out of work. The bidding process for the Pope & Talbot mills wrapped up on the same day.
