An overwhelming vote to reject AbitibiBowater’s final offer  leaves Grand Falls-Windsor employees without a clear way forward. A total of 88% of Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union members voted against the company’s latest version of its cost-cutting plan. According to a report by the Telegram, union officials claim the offer presented no definite future for the mill, and “fell short” on early retirement packages for older workers.

The company said the offer was its final one, and that it was designed to make the facility competitive. According to the Telegram, company officials expressed disappointment at the rejection of the offer, but could not be reached for comment concerning possible next steps.
