VIDEO: Columbia Pulp expects mid-2019 start-up
June 10, 2019 – Columbia Pulp, a straw pulp mill located in Washington, has shared a new video of its progress ahead of start-up, which it now estimates will be in mid-summer 2019.

The drone video was shot by Logan Albrecht from Pacific Civil & Infrastructure, the construction company involved on the project.
The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, a local Washington newspaper headquartered near the mill’s site in Columbia County, reports that Columbia Pulp is in the final stages of commissioning and hiring more workers. The mill is expected to employ about 100 people.
The tree-free pulp mill, located on a 182-hectare (45-acre) site in Lyons Ferry, will produce 140,000 U.S. tons a year of commodity and specialty straw pulp, sourced from within a 121-kilometre (75-mile) radius, as a sustainable alternative to wood-based pulp. Columbia Pulp says it is the first straw pulp mill of its kind in North America.

The company also says the quality specifications of its wheat and alfalfa seed straw pulp are equal to, if not more than, virgin or recycled wood pulp, with fibres that are slightly longer than those found in hardwood. The product formed through the pulping process is called “wet lap,” and is more expensive to ship due to its high moisture content.
The plant will also produce 75,000 to 85,000 tons of bio-polymer to be used for dust abatement on roads, de-icing, and fertilizer applications.
A total of 240,000 tons of wheat straw are expected to be used at the mill annually.
