In anticipation of a slow summer, Western Forest Products has decided to close several of its sawmills on Vancouver Island for the warmer months. Lagging sales and inflated supplies of logs and lumber prompted the decision. Logging activities will also be scaled back during the months of July and August, the company confirmed.
While some of the facilities actually lay off workers during the period between late June and early September, others will simply make do with fewer shifts. The Globe and Mail recently reported the company as saying it intends to delay interest payments in an effort to preserve cash.
