Hudson Bay, SK -Weyerhaeuser is set to close the last of its mills in Saskatchewan, CBC has reported. The oriented strand-board facility in Hudson Bay, located in the east-central part of the province, will shut down in July, for an indefinite period of time. A total of 170 people are employed by the mill.
According to the CBC report, Weyerhaeuser cites challenges associated with a difficult business climate as necessitating the closure. “The continued challenges in the North American housing market require us to bring supply into balance with demand,” CBC reported vice president Phil Dennet as saying. The company further confirmed the mill will be shut down in a manner conducive to an eventual restart, and is on the lookout for buyers.
Weyerhaeuser closed its Prince Albert pulp and paper facility in 2006, and lumber mills in Carrot River and Hudson Bay earlier this year.
