Softwood fibre prices are bordering on a 12-year high in BC, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review.

Wood costs were more than 30% higher in the third quarter of 2008 than they were two years ago. BC and Alberta pulp mills have fared better than their eastern provincial counterparts, however, with prices much lower in the west. In the third quarter, there was as much as a 30% price discrepancy for wood between the two coasts.

Lumber production is also suffering, the Review noted, down 22% from one year ago.
