Legislation that will help protect forest products workers has earned the support of the American Forest and Products Association. The legislation, H.R. 6328, or the ‘Worker, Retiree and Employer Recovery Act of 2008’ provides companies with tools to manage plans in the economic downturn without relying on jobs cuts or jeopardizing retirement plans for current workers.
“The forest products industry has lost 14% of its workforce in the past three years, so initiatives that help keep our companies strong, keep our employees working, and protect retirees are things for which we fight hard,” president and CEO of the AF&PA, Donna Harman, said. “Companies that are already under pressure from the sagging economy need flexibility to ride out the current storm, support their retirees, and provide jobs to today’s workers.”
