Montreal, QC and Greenville, SC — Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Inc. announced continued progress with the U.S. Department of Justice, and reaffirmed their expectation that their proposed merger will receive approval within the next few weeks. The closing is now anticipated for early in the fourth quarter. The combined company, Abitibi-Bowater, will be the eighth largest publicly traded pulp and paper manufacturer in the world, owning or operating 32 pulp and paper facilities and 35 wood product facilities located in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and South Korea. Building on the environmental strengths of its component companies, it will be among the world’s largest recyclers of newspapers and magazines, and have more third-party certified sustainable forest land than any other company in the world.
