The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has asked the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development to investigate recent activities of UPM Kymmene. The owner and operator of a kraft pulp and paper mill in Miramichi, NB is accused of committing "serious breaches" of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The company is further accused of allegedly fostering a hostile working environment by refusing to disclose information to the union surrounding its announced closure of the mill, hiring security agents to monitor workers’ activities and refusing to settle worker grievances on the job.
