Effluent leak stopped at Northern Pulp’s Nova Scotia mill
October 22, 2018 By P&PC Staff
October 22, 2018 – Northern Pulp has confirmed an effluent leak has been stopped at its Pictou Landing, Nova Scotia pulp mill.
The CBC reports that the leak was confirmed by Northern Pulp’s parent company, Paper Excellence Canada, shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 21, a day after the mill had started its annual maintenance shutdown.
Thirty minutes after the company was notified of a possible leak, the flow had been stopped.
Kathy Cloutier, director of communications for Paper Excellence Canada, told the CBC that Northern Pulp immediately notified authorities and First Nations leaders after discovering the leak.
An independent environmental consultant will evaluate the site and provide recommendations.
