Toronto, ON -A recent report released by Greenpeace warns of a potential ‘carbon bomb’ that could be released through logging activity in Canada’s Boreal Forest. The report indicates that logging in the Boreal ramps up global warming through the release of greenhouse gases and the reduction of carbon storage. The report further notes that logging renders the forest more vulnerable to impacts of global warming such as wildfires and insect outbreaks, which further release more greenhouse gases.
The report, Turning Up the Heat: Global Warming and the Degradation of Canada’s Boreal Forest, is a collection of scientific literature of the past decade and warns that if current trends perpetuate, a “carbon bomb” -a “massive and sudden release of greenhouse gases driven by an outbreak of forest or peat fires,” could result.
