MONTREAL, QC — Domtar Industries Inc. has signed an agreement with the American union, the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union, or PACE. The six-year labour agreement at the Ashdown, AK, mill is the second for the company since it acquired four pulp and paper mills in August 2001.

It has previously signed a six-year deal with workers at the Woodland, ME, facility. Roger H. Brear, senior vice-president, pulp and paper manufacturing group, remarked that the agreements are fair, and meet industry standards. “With these in hand, we will continue to devote our full attention to safely manufacture the highest quality pulp and paper products and consistently meet the needs of our customers.”

Labour agreements at Domtar’s two other American mills — in Nekoosa, WI, and Port Edwards, WI — will end in 2003. Negotiations are scheduled to take place at that time.

Brear: “These agreements are fair for both our employees and our company and according to our industry standards.”
