VANCOUVER, BC — Canfor Corp., Canada’s largest producer of market pulp, plans to increase its annual pulp production by more than 10% within three years. David Emerson, president and chief executive, said Canfor wants to increase production to 1.5 million t/y from 1.3 million. Growth will be achieved through acquisition, Emerson noted. “There’s no place where you can build cheaper than you can buy in North America, particularly in Canada.” The company is looking for mills in eastern and western Canada. It expects to pay for acquisitions with stock. Pulp prices have risen 40% in the past 14 months to about US$640/tonne, and is expected to hit $700/tonne by the end of 2000.
