The economists have been saying it all along, and now the forestry industry is following suit: The economic downturn currently plaguing the U.S. doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for the Canadian economy.
The recently announced closure of NewPage’s mill in Wisconsin has left Port Hawkesbury, where the company owns a facility, reasonably concerned, but the worry isn’t grounded in any expected action, the ChronicleHerald reported.
“I’ve been assured by NewPage that they are quite happy with the performance of the (Point Tupper) mill,” the paper reported Port Hawkesbury mayor Billy Joe MacLean as saying.
NewPage bought up all eight of Stora Enso’s North American paper mill holdings last year, in a $2.5 billion deal that included both the Wisconsin and Nova Scotia facilities. NewPage confirmed plans to shutter the Wisconsin mill by the end of this month, putting 475 people out of work in the process.
However, the ChronicleHerald reported NewPage spokesman Shawn Hall as saying that closure will have no impact on its Point Tupper, NS operations.
