John Peel has distilled more than 40 years of paper industry experience as a teacher and practical industrial researcher into this concise, up-to-date, 272-page book. PAPER SCIENCE AND PAPER MANUFACTURE is divided into 14 chapters and seven appendices with over 300 figures and tables to cover the wide breadth of topics which form the basic knowledge of scientific papermaking.

The papermaking process is covered from stock preparation to the winder, including treatment of sizing and pigment coating. The descriptions are augmented with the relevant theory and key equations to better understand the underlying phenomena. The text also discusses the major grades of paper and their properties and the connections between converting requirements and manufacturing techniques. Especially valuable is the inclusion of much material on multi-ply forming and the properties of layered structures. Key aspects of papermaking chemistry are carefully explained.

Typical values of fibre and paper properties and machine operating conditions are provided throughout the book. Over and above what is provided in the text, additional valuable information is contained in the captions to the figures and tables. Each chapter has a good set of references. The index to the entire book is exhaustive.

PAPER SCIENCE AND PAPER MANUFACTURE will be an invaluable reference for papermaking engineers and technologists, and is suitable as a textbook for university-level courses on scientific papermaking.
