Planned curtailment at Cariboo Pulp and Paper mill in spring and fall

February 7, 2023  By P&PC Staff

Operations at Cariboo Pulp and Paper Mill in Quesnel, British Columbia will be curtailed beginning in mid-April for a month and then for another month in the third quarter of 2023. The planned curtailment of the mill, jointly owned by West Fraser and Mercer International, is the result of the decline in the availability of sawmill residuals.

Both companies explained in their press statements that the fibre supply challenge in British Columbia is well documented. Infestation, fire, and government policy decisions have all impacted the amount of available fibre in the province.

Downtime at the Cariboo Pulp and Paper will help better align the production capacity this year with the available fibre supply. These plans may be adjusted should fibre forecasts change.

Cariboo Pulp and Paper expects to mitigate some of the impact on its affected employees through vacation scheduling and alternative work assignments.
