A TMP AQC (Advanced Quality Control) solution designed by Invensys Performance Solutions (formerly Walsh Automation) and its partner Pacific Simulation (PacSim) has enabled the Abitibi-Consolidated newsprint mill in Stephenville, NF, to improve its product quality. As a result, the mill is able to target and satisfy markets requiring the strictest quality specifications. (Pulp & Paper Canada, August 2000)

Invensys and PacSim implemented the technologically advanced controls on the mill’s TMP process and installed online advisory systems that use online information to help operators control and ensure high final product quality.

Benefits gained by the mill include an 80% reduction in paper quality variability and a 50% decrease in pulp quality variability. In addition, shive content was reduced by 30% and energy consumption by 1.5%. As part of this project’s post-implementation phase, Invensys and PacSim will help Abitibi-Consolidated sustain peak performance at the Stephenville mill through remote online monitoring.
