Portland, OR–The downturn in the U.S. housing market is having an impact on two BC sawmills. Pope & Talbot sawmills in Grand Forks, BC and Castlegar, BC will be closed for two weeks from August 20 through September 3 in order to reduce finished goods inventories. The high-quality softwood lumber produced by these mills is affected by falling softwood prices.
Pope & Talbot CEO Harold Stanton noted, the poor softwood lumber market has led to a situation where it is not profitable for us to run at normal capacity. Moving forward, we will continue to make adjustments as the market dictates.
