Members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union rejected a final offer to keep St. Marys Paper in Sault Ste. Marie, ON up and running, SooNews has reported. The vote came on the heels of an official final offer from the company, issued on March 16, at which point the union requested members reject it.

It is with great regret that we inform our employees, customers, suppliers and the broader community of this unfortunate decision, president and CEO Ron Stern said. The Bank of America has lost confidence in the companys ability to achieve a satisfactory restructuring, particularly given that no labour agreement has been reached with the union.

Orders to start liquidating the company have been issued, SooNews confirmed, and the search is on for a potential buyer for the mill. No new orders will be taken from customers and production will be phased out over the next few months.
